Palmetto, GA – June 27, 2011 – A thunderstorm Sunday night that brought lightning and strong wind gusts to the Coweta-Fayette EMC service area resulted in scattered outages, broken poles, downed lines and damaged equipment.
Approximately 2,500-3,000 members lost power during the storm, which left 14 broken poles and lightning-damaged equipment in its wake. EMC crews worked throughout the night Sunday to repair the damage, and co-op officials said Monday morning that electric service should be restored by early that afternoon.
“Trees and limbs that break or fall onto power lines due to high winds are the largest cause of power outages, and the resulting damage takes time to repair,” said Coweta-Fayette CEO Anthony “Tony” Sinclair. “Our crews know how critical electricity is to our members, and they work around the clock in potentially adverse circumstances to restore service as quickly as possible.”
Coweta-Fayette EMC is a consumer-owned cooperative providing electricity and related services to over 74,000 member accounts in Coweta, Fayette, Heard, South Fulton, Clayton, Spalding, Troup and Meriwether Counties.
