Palmetto, GA – July 8, 2011 – To further enrich Coweta-Fayette EMC’s commitment to community, the cooperative recently offered academic scholarships to service-territory students for the 2011 school year.
The Coweta-Fayette Trust, Inc., Board of Directors awarded $16,000 to 16 technical school attendees enrolled at both West Georgia Technical College and Southern Crescent Technical College (Griffin Tech). Through the Melissa Segars Memorial Scholarship program, $36,000 was also awarded to 16 high school students bound for colleges and universities this fall.
Ten of the EMC’s technical college winners selected to receive individual $1,000 grants for tuition, books or course-specific tools and equipment were from Fayette County, as were 10 graduating seniors receiving scholarships.
The 2011 Fayette technical scholarship winners are: Cory Anderson, Fayetteville; Krista Bennett, Fayetteville; Kevin Butler, Peachtree City; Heather Butler, Peachtree City; Bhartiben Patel, Peachtree City; Rebecca Patterson, Fayetteville; Merlyn Paz, Fayetteville; Jasmine Rowe, Fayetteville; Karla Smith, Peachtree City; and Gregory Wallis, Fayetteville.
The 2011 Fayette Melissa Segars Memorial Scholarship winners are: Edmund D. Hawkins, Fayette County High School, $1,500; Carlton Hartley Imes, Landmark Christian School, $1,500; Ashley LaTour, Starr’s Mill High School, $1,500; Justyce Lewis, Whitewater High School, $1,500; Daniel Sanderfur, Fayette County High School, $1,500; Quannaires Streeter, Sandy Creek High School, $1,500; Michal Holby, Landmark Christian School, $3,000; Nadjuma Jean-Simon, Fayette County High School, $3,000; Mitchell Turner, Sandy Creek High School, $3,000; and Autumn E. Vineyard, Landmark Christian School, $3,000.
Coweta-Fayette Trust, Inc./Operation Round Up has awarded 100 technical scholarships totaling $138,400 since the program began in 2000. Over the past 17 years, cooperative programs have helped fund over $400,000 in scholarships to graduating high school seniors in the EMC service area.
Operation Round Up is a Coweta-Fayette EMC program that contributes more than $200,000 each year to worthy groups in the co-op’s service area. These awards are made possible by voluntary contributions from cooperative members whose monthly electric bills are “rounded up” to the nearest dollar. The difference between what is actually owed and the next highest dollar is placed in an interest-bearing account, and this money is managed through a separate board of directors, the Coweta-Fayette Trust.
Coweta-Fayette EMC is a consumer-owned cooperative providing electricity and related services to over 74,000 member accounts in Coweta, Fayette, Heard, South Fulton, Clayton, Spalding, Troup and Meriwether Counties.
