Palmetto, GA – November 11, 2011 – Fairness and mutual respect are just two of the character-building qualities that represent good sportsmanship, according to the directors and employees at Coweta-Fayette EMC, which recently honored Our Lady of Mercy Catholic High School in Fairburn with the 2011 Georgia High School Association’s (GHSA’s) Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award.

Mary Ann Bell, Coweta-Fayette EMC’s Vice President of Marketing, presented the sportsmanship trophy October 31 to Athletic Director Bill Schmitz and several student athletes. The award honors the GHSA member schools that exhibited outstanding sportsmanship during the 2010-2011 school year.

Introduced in 2006 and sponsored by Georgia’s electric cooperatives and the GHSA, the Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award promotes sportsmanship at competitive events and honors the conduct of not only student athletes, but also that of fellow students, parents, coaches and spectators, making the award a tribute to the entire school community.

“Good sportsmanship is one of the most important principles a person can exhibit, and it falls in line with the principles that cooperatives operate and live by. Coweta-Fayette EMC is proud to support the sportsmanship initiative,” said Bell. “Our co-op principles stress important values, such as cooperation and teamwork, which are just as relevant on the high school playing field as they are to co-op employees in the workplace.”

Georgia’s electric cooperatives have sponsored GHSA championship events for twelve years and look forward to promoting sportsmanship at all GHSA competitive events.

Coweta-Fayette EMC is a consumer-owned cooperative providing electricity and related services to over 74,000 member accounts in Coweta, Fayette, Heard, South Fulton, Clayton, Spalding, Troup and Meriwether Counties.
