CFEMC hosts job shadowing for Heard County High School students

PALMETTO, GA, February 3, 2023 – Coweta-Fayette EMC (CFEMC) hosted a job shadowing activity for Heard County High School students as a way to help benefit our future workforce.

On January 19, six students joined CFEMC to learn about the duties, responsibilities and career paths of linemen, staking technicians, and warehouse personnel.

While observing, they learned about the electric system and equipment used, including substations, transmission lines and distribution lines, as well as power line design and staking, and the overall functions of the warehouse.

“I spent the day cross-training John Paul Awbrey, Heard County High School senior, who is interested in the field of Staking. I showed him new commercial and residential power installations, and he and I staked an underground power replacement job together. I think the whole experience was productive for both of us,” said CFEMC’s Steve Jones, Senior Staking Technician.

This provided the opportunity for students to gain appropriate knowledge and exposure to these roles, learn about the education and training required, and gain hands-on experience.

“This was a great opportunity for us to share how much EMC has to offer to our future workforce. It allowed us to teach them about jobs and possible career paths within the utilities,” said Lori Adams, CFEMC’s Director of Human Resources.

Students were also given information about the Coweta-Fayette EMC Lineman Scholarship, currently offered by CFEMC. This scholarship allows high school graduates and graduating seniors the chance to complete West GA Technical School Lineman Program, all expenses paid.

More information about this scholarship, open year round, can be found by visiting our website at www.utility.org.
