Electricity powers our lives, but when mishandled or misunderstood, it can be dangerous. We’re here to keep you informed and safe. Whether lines are overhead, underground or damaged during a storm, it’s critical to know how to stay protected around power lines.
Overhead Lines:
Power lines above our heads can carry thousands of volts—even if they don’t look dangerous.
Remember: You can’t tell by looking if a line is live or dead. Always assume it’s energized.
Here’s how to stay safe:
-
Stay at least 10 feet away from overhead power lines when working outside—especially with ladders, poles or drones.
-
Never touch a downed or low-hanging line. Report it immediately.
-
If you see a tree or branch touching a line, don’t try to remove it—call us instead at 770-502-0226.
Underground Lines:
Just because you can’t see them doesn’t mean they aren’t there. Before any digging project (fencing, planting, or landscaping) always call 811 to locate underground utilities.
-
It’s free, fast, and required by law.
-
Underground lines can carry the same voltage as overhead ones—treat them with the same caution.
Trees & Power Lines:
Storms and high winds can knock branches into power lines, causing outages or even fires.
Help us maintain a safer grid by:
-
Never trimming trees near lines yourself.
-
Reporting trees that grow too close to power lines.
-
Understanding that tree contact with power lines can energize the tree, posing a deadly risk.
After a Storm:
After storms, lines can be down, hidden by debris or lying in puddles. Stay alert:
-
Keep your distance from any fallen lines or poles.
-
Don’t walk or drive over downed wires.
-
Be cautious around standing water – it can conduct electricity.
- Be aware of lines in fallen vegetation. If you being clean-up, ensure no lines are tangled in your work area.
If you lose power, report the outage to your co-op and let our trained crews handle the repairs safely.
Whether it’s overhead, underground or downed in a storm, NEVER take chances with electricity.
Your safety matters, and we’re here to help you stay informed and protected.
