Old Man Winter comes to Georgia

How CFEMC Prepared, Responded, and Helps Members Stay Efficient

Winter made an early appearance across Georgia in late January, bringing freezing temperatures and the threat of significant ice from Winter Storm Fern. While many communities experienced widespread outages and hazardous conditions, Coweta-Fayette Electric Membership Corporation (CFEMC) is grateful that our service area was ultimately spared the worst of the storm. In the days leading up to the  event, CFEMC crews and operations teams worked diligently to prepare for the possibility of ice accumulation and power interruptions. Trucks were equipped, materials were staged, and response plans  were activated to ensure we could move quickly if members needed us.

Although the storm shifted north and our system remained largely unaffected, we proudly sent CFEMC crews to assist co-ops in the harder-hit regions of North Georgia including Habersham EMC. Supporting fellow cooperatives is a longstanding tradition in the cooperative network, and we’re honored to lend a hand when others are in need. Even though we avoided the worst of the ice, the drop in temperatures will still drive higher energy use, especially as heating systems work harder to keep homes comfortable. Increased demand can lead to higher electric bills, making this the perfect time to
check in on your energy habits.

To help you stay efficient this winter, we encourage you to visit our CFEMC YouTube channel and watch our energy‑saving series, Watts Matter. The episodes offer quick, practical tips to help reduce energy consumption and manage winter heating costs.

Stay warm, stay safe, and as always—CFEMC is here for you.
