Electric Utility Lineman

Role and Responsibilities

To safely and efficiently erect, remove, and maintain electric distribution lines, services, and equipment both energized and de-energized, as well as, restore service in the event of power outage.

Effectively and accurately performs the following functions:

  • Safely construct, remove, and maintain the electric distribution lines and equipment according to staking sheets, sag charts, National Electric Safety Codes, and any other applicable rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Construct underground and/or overhead electric lines including but not limited to, installing and removing poles, cross-arms, and related hardware, stringing wires to connect conductors, handling transformers, installing pad mount gear and underground conductors, tree trimming and limb removal, and any other tasks related to energized and de-energized line construction.  
  • Maintain the electric distribution system by replacing damaged transformers, breakers, regulators, conductors, insulators, meter loops, poles, switching gear, and other related hardware. 
  • Operate line switches, locate and repair faults, refuse line and transformer cutouts, change line and transformer taps, and phase out parallel circuits, both overhead and/or underground. 
  • Patrol overhead and underground electric distribution lines and report needed maintenance and repairs on the system as observed.  
  • Prepare and interpret staking sheets, work sketches, system maps, and any other related records consistent with RUS and the Cooperative’s standard guidelines, practices, and policies. 
  • Observe and all safety rules and regulations and correct and/or report any unsafe practices or conditions. 
  • Accurately prepare and maintain records for all material, equipment, and other charges utilized while performing job duties. 
  • May be required to direct crew personnel in the absence of the Crew Chief or when assigned by Supervisor. 

Qualifications, Education, and Other Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent course of study certification.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience as a lineman and successful completion of the Georgia EMC Apprentice Program or other approved line worker apprenticeship program (to be determined at the discretion of management).  Applicants may be subject to pass the Georgia EMC Apprentice Program testing modules 
  • Must be available for pre-arranged stand-by duty according to schedules established by management.
  • Compliance with DOT regulations and a current CDL license.
  • Physically capable to climb wooden poles and to walk long distances over varying types of terrain and obstacles.
  • Required to be available for on-call duty assignments including working after regular working hours and on Saturdays, Sundays, and company observed holidays.
  • Required to respond quickly to all outage and emergency situations. 
  • Must keep current contact information on file with Supervisor and be accessible for outage and emergency situations.

  • Internal:  Immediate Supervisor, all levels of cooperative personnel.
  • External: Members, GEMC personnel, Personnel from other Cooperatives, Law Enforcement, and General Public.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

  • Very Heavy Work. Exerts force in excess of 100 pounds occasionally, in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. 
  • Reaches and lifts overhead.
  • Ascends and descends electric poles frequently using feet and legs and/or hands and arms.  Body agility is emphasized. 
  • Must maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling. 
  • Bends body downward and forward frequently by bending spine at the waist requiring full use of lower extremities and back muscles. 
  • Bends legs at knee and moves about on hands and knees. 
  • Uses upper extremities to press again something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward, or outward and to exert force to draw, drag, or tug objects in a sustained motion. 
  • Majority of time spent outdoors.
  • Exposure to varying temperature conditions including cold below 32 degrees and heat above 100 degrees.
  • The use of PPE and safety equipment required (i.e. climbing harness and FR clothing).
  • Must be able to communicate; listening and speaking accurately, loudly, or quickly. 
  • Works on uneven terrain in areas along and off road right-of-ways often encountering vehicular traffic.
  • Works frequently with or near energized power lines. 
  • Works around noisy construction machinery. 
  • Visually inspects work for safe connection and compliant design. 
  • Must be able to read, write, and do arithmetic.
  • Must be able to weigh and measure.

Financial Analyst

Position Summary:

Are you passionate about numbers, strategy, and solving complex financial puzzles? This role goes beyond the basics of spreadsheets and reports—you’ll be the financial compass of our cooperative, providing key insights and forecasts that influence high-level decisions. This position will work across departments to ensure financial strategies are sound, budgets are aligned with our goals, and forecasting adapts to changing landscapes.

What You’ll Be Doing:

Financial Analysis and Reporting

  •  Translate raw financial data into powerful insights through variance analysis, KPIs, and dashboards.
  • Provide actionable intelligence to support executive decision-making and departmental initiatives.
  • Assist with the preparation and presentation of monthly, quarterly, and annual reports that tell the story behind the numbers.

 

Financial Forecasting

  • Collaborate across departments to develop accurate, forward-looking financial forecasts grounded in data and industry knowledge.
  • Monitor economic and utility-specific trends to help guide our strategic response.
  • Regularly update forecasts based on emerging market shifts and operational realities.

 

Budgeting

  • Partner with leadership to build and maintain a realistic and strategic annual budget.
  • Monitor actuals vs. budget, analyze deviations, and recommend course corrections.
  • Ensure financial plans are aligned with both departmental goals and cooperative-wide strategies.

 

Data Modeling and Scenario Analysis

  • Build robust financial models to evaluate new business opportunities and operational initiatives.
  • Run “what if” scenarios to explore potential risks and opportunities.
  • Assist in shaping our cash and debt strategy with an eye toward liquidity, risk tolerance, and return optimization.

 

Support Accounting Operations

  • Step in as needed to support day-to-day accounting functions, ensuring seamless financial operations.
  • Assist with internal and external audits, tax filings, and banking transactions.
  • Contribute to tax strategy reviews and help identify ways to reduce liabilities and improve compliance.

    What You Bring to the Table:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field (Master’s degree or CFA certification is a plus), with 5 years of experience in financial analysis, accounting, corporate finance, or a related role.
    • Strong analytical mind with excellent attention to detail, sound judgment, and a passion for continuous improvement.
    • Solid knowledge of GAAP, financial modeling best practices, and utility industry operations
    • Familiarity with the overall operations of an electric utility is preferred.
    • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, with the ability to translate complex data into clear, actionable insights.
    • Strong interpersonal skills, discretion with confidential information, and a collaborative spirit for working across departments and managing multiple projects effectively.
    • Highly organized and able to balance competing priorities in a dynamic environment.

    Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

    • Mostly a desk job—lots of sitting, with occasional walking or standing.
    • May need to lift or carry light items (up to 10 pounds) now and then.
    • Should be ready to jump in during emergencies, even if it’s outside regular hours.
    • Some travel is part of the role, both within and beyond the cooperative’s service area.
    • Occasionally, you might need to work evenings or weekends.
    • There’s a fair amount of typing and using your hands for things like dialing or keyboard work.
    • Good eyesight is important for reviewing data, reading, editing, and working on a computer for long periods.
